Abrange cerca de seis milh\u00f5es de quil\u00f4metros quadrados, representando cerca de um ter\u00e7o da Am\u00e9rica do Sul. Embora a grande escala e a dificuldade de acesso tornem as observa\u00e7\u00f5es de campo desafiadoras, o sensoriamento remoto pode fornecer informa\u00e7\u00f5es valiosas. Um <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1029\/2020RG000728\">artigo<\/a><\/strong><\/span> publicado recentemente na <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/journal\/19449208\"><i><strong>Reviews of Geophysics<\/strong><\/i><\/a><\/span> explora os pontos fortes e as limita\u00e7\u00f5es das observa\u00e7\u00f5es por sat\u00e9lite da bacia amaz\u00f4nica e faz recomenda\u00e7\u00f5es para melhorar esses sistemas observacionais.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Por que a Amaz\u00f4nia \u00e9 t\u00e3o importante para os hidr\u00f3logos estudarem?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Bacia Amaz\u00f4nica \u00e9 not\u00e1vel por suas altas taxas de precipita\u00e7\u00e3o, evapora\u00e7\u00e3o e vaz\u00e3o fluvial. Este \u00faltimo representa cerca de 20% da quantidade total de \u00e1gua doce global que chega ao oceano a cada ano. A hidrologia da Amaz\u00f4nia tem impactos de longo alcance no clima regional e global. Por exemplo, a bacia fornece umidade para as partes do sul da Am\u00e9rica do Sul. Como uma grande fonte de calor nos tr\u00f3picos e fortes processos convectivos, tamb\u00e9m impacta significativamente a circula\u00e7\u00e3o atmosf\u00e9rica global. Al\u00e9m disso, as \u00e1guas superficiais da Amaz\u00f4nia s\u00e3o uma importante fonte e sumidouro de di\u00f3xido de carbono e a maior fonte natural de metano nos tr\u00f3picos.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Que ferramentas observacionais os cientistas usam para monitorar os processos hidrol\u00f3gicos na bacia amaz\u00f4nica?\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bacia amaz\u00f4nica \u00e9 uma grande e remota bacia hidrogr\u00e1fica tropical, principalmente coberta por floresta densa, o que torna as observa\u00e7\u00f5es <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in situ <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desafiadoras. H\u00e1 uma s\u00e9rie de redes de monitoramento que medem o n\u00edvel da \u00e1gua e a pluviosidade, al\u00e9m de torres de fluxo que rastreiam a troca de CO2 entre a floresta e a atmosfera. Essas redes s\u00e3o essenciais para os cientistas entenderem os processos hidrol\u00f3gicos, mas tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o limitadas devido \u00e0 grande extens\u00e3o da bacia e \u00e0 variabilidade espa\u00e7o-temporal dos processos dentro dela. Alguns fen\u00f4menos, como a extens\u00e3o de inunda\u00e7\u00f5es, s\u00e3o quase imposs\u00edveis de avaliar <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in situ<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O sensoriamento remoto \u00e9 uma ferramenta fundamental para superar essas limita\u00e7\u00f5es, pois fornece um ponto de vista observacional mais amplo. Os dados de sat\u00e9lite podem ser usados \u200b\u200bpara estimar uma variedade de fatores, incluindo precipita\u00e7\u00e3o, evapotranspira\u00e7\u00e3o, n\u00edvel de \u00e1gua, extens\u00e3o da superf\u00edcie da \u00e1gua, concentra\u00e7\u00e3o de sedimentos, topografia e varia\u00e7\u00e3o de armazenamento de \u00e1gua em uma grande \u00e1rea e continuamente. A combina\u00e7\u00e3o de observa\u00e7\u00f5es in situ com dados de sat\u00e9lite \u00e9 um divisor de \u00e1guas para a ci\u00eancia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Como os avan\u00e7os no sensoriamento remoto por sat\u00e9lite ajudaram os pesquisadores a entender melhor o ciclo da \u00e1gua na bacia amaz\u00f4nica?\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gra\u00e7as \u00e0s suas caracter\u00edsticas de grandes rios e fortes sinais hidrol\u00f3gicos, a bacia amaz\u00f4nica \u00e9 um laborat\u00f3rio ideal para o desenvolvimento de t\u00e9cnicas de sensoriamento remoto. Os avan\u00e7os no sensoriamento remoto permitiram a caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o de diversos processos hidrol\u00f3gicos na bacia. Dois exemplos de destaque s\u00e3o a caracteriza\u00e7\u00e3o das <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/2016JD026282\">chuvas orogr\u00e1ficas na regi\u00e3o dos Andes<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> e a estimativa da quantidade de \u00e1gua armazenada anualmente nas v\u00e1rzeas amaz\u00f4nicas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muitas t\u00e9cnicas de sensoriamento remoto desenvolvidas e testadas na Amaz\u00f4nia passaram a ser usadas globalmente. Por exemplo, h\u00e1 uma tend\u00eancia de aumento da precipita\u00e7\u00e3o na parte norte da bacia, aumento da vaz\u00e3o e aumento da \u00e1rea inundada, portanto, os riscos de inunda\u00e7\u00e3o est\u00e3o aumentando. O oposto est\u00e1 ocorrendo na regi\u00e3o sul, onde h\u00e1 uma tend\u00eancia de redu\u00e7\u00e3o de chuvas e vaz\u00e3o. Al\u00e9m disso, o prolongamento do per\u00edodo seco tem aumentado nos \u00faltimos anos, o que est\u00e1 gerando estresse h\u00eddrico nas florestas tropicais, tornando-as mais vulner\u00e1veis \u200b\u200b\u00e0 morte. Por exemplo, o uso de observa\u00e7\u00f5es vis\u00edveis\/\u00f3pticas, que s\u00e3o ferramentas muito poderosas, s\u00e3o limitadas em regi\u00f5es cobertas por nuvens e vegeta\u00e7\u00e3o densa.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Muitas vezes tamb\u00e9m h\u00e1 um <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade-off<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> entre amostragem (quantas vezes o sat\u00e9lite passa sobre o mesmo ponto) e cobertura espacial (tamanho da \u00e1rea). Por exemplo, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/asf.alaska.edu\/information\/sar-information\/what-is-sar\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>t\u00e9cnicas de Radar de Abertura Sint\u00e9tica (SAR)<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mostram grandes capacidades para medir a extens\u00e3o da \u00e1gua superficial em alta resolu\u00e7\u00e3o (10 a 100 metros), mas sofrem com um tempo de revisita temporal baixo, tornando-as inadequadas para monitorar processos hidrol\u00f3gicos r\u00e1pidos.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Al\u00e9m disso, apesar do crescente n\u00famero de dados de sat\u00e9lite, ainda \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio garantir s\u00e9ries temporais suficientemente longas para entender e fazer o levantamento das mudan\u00e7as ambientais na Amaz\u00f4nia.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Al\u00e9m disso, ainda h\u00e1 dificuldades em derivar certos par\u00e2metros geof\u00edsicos de dados baseados em sat\u00e9lites, como <\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hess.copernicus.org\/articles\/25\/2279\/2021\/\">evapotranspira\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. O reconhecimento de incertezas em v\u00e1rios dados de sensoriamento remoto e os trade-offs entre resolu\u00e7\u00e3o temporal e espacial apontam para a necessidade de <\/span><b>abordagens mais integrativas.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Este \u00e9 o caso do mapeamento de padr\u00f5es de inunda\u00e7\u00e3o e evapotranspira\u00e7\u00e3o de longo prazo em altas resolu\u00e7\u00f5es espa\u00e7o-temporais. <\/span><b>A intelig\u00eancia artificial desempenhar\u00e1 um papel importante no desenvolvimento futuro.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acreditamos tamb\u00e9m que um melhor acoplamento dos conjuntos de dados de Observa\u00e7\u00e3o da Terra com modelos hidrol\u00f3gico-hidr\u00e1ulicos e modelos de superf\u00edcie terrestre (como assimila\u00e7\u00e3o de dados e interpola\u00e7\u00e3o espa\u00e7o-temporal) tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 um passo necess\u00e1rio n<\/span>a<b> modelagem do Sistema Terrestre,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> considerando o aspecto din\u00e2mico da hidrologia da Amaz\u00f4nia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Novas miss\u00f5es orientadas para a hidrologia nos pr\u00f3ximos anos, como &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/swot.jpl.nasa.gov\/\">Topografia de \u00c1guas de Superf\u00edcie e Oce\u00e2nica (SWOT)&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> e &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nisar.jpl.nasa.gov\/\">ISRO-NASA SAR (NISAR)&#8221;<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, proporcionar\u00e3o um novo marco no monitoramento das \u00e1guas amaz\u00f4nicas a partir do espa\u00e7o.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Da mesma forma, as constela\u00e7\u00f5es de nanossat\u00e9lites forneceram a capacidade de atualizar frequentemente informa\u00e7\u00f5es sobre a superf\u00edcie da Terra, o que podem torn\u00e1-los cr\u00edticos para monitorar a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o de eventos como inc\u00eandios florestais e inunda\u00e7\u00f5es, mas a custos mais baixos do que seus pares maiores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\"><b>Quais s\u00e3o algumas das quest\u00f5es n\u00e3o resolvidas em que pesquisas, dados ou modelagem adicionais s\u00e3o necess\u00e1rios?\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p style=\"text-align: left;\">A bacia amaz\u00f4nica est\u00e1 passando por m\u00faltiplas press\u00f5es naturais e antr\u00f3picas, incluindo <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/science.abj4017\">barragens<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0034425714002296\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>minera\u00e7\u00e3o<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-021-82158-8\">inc\u00eandios<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, secas\/cheias e <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/rmets.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1002\/joc.6335\">desmatamento<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, por isso h\u00e1 uma urg\u00eancia em entender como o ciclo hidrol\u00f3gico \u00e9 afetado.
