Apesar deste n\u00famero j\u00e1 ser impressionante, \u00e9 estimado que ainda existam centenas ou at\u00e9 milhares de esp\u00e9cies de peixes ainda n\u00e3o descritas formalmente. Em outras palavras, a descri\u00e7\u00e3o formal de uma esp\u00e9cie \u00e9 o seu \u201cbatizado\u201d, geralmente registrada em um artigo cient\u00edfico no qual \u00e9 dado um nome cient\u00edfico e uma descri\u00e7\u00e3o detalhada das caracter\u00edsticas da nova esp\u00e9cie. Por\u00e9m, esse processo n\u00e3o costuma ser t\u00e3o simples, podendo levar meses ou at\u00e9 anos para um artigo ser publicado. Contudo, conhecer essa megadiversidade, al\u00e9m de exigir estrat\u00e9gias bem delimitadas, demanda um grande esfor\u00e7o coletivo de especialistas. Nesse sentido, umas das pr\u00e1ticas mais eficientes para o conhecimento da biodiversidade \u00e9 o estudo de revis\u00f5es taxon\u00f4micas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><b>Como funcionam as revis\u00f5es taxon\u00f4micas dos peixes?\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ao longo de d\u00e9cadas, centenas de expedi\u00e7\u00f5es j\u00e1 foram realizadas na bacia amaz\u00f4nica com o objetivo de catalogar as esp\u00e9cies de peixes. Nessas expedi\u00e7\u00f5es, \u00e9 comum o reconhecimento de esp\u00e9cies novas, principalmente aquelas esp\u00e9cies ditas \u201cbandeirosas\u201d, \u201cchamativas\u201d, que apresentam alguma caracter\u00edstica peculiar, que ao primeiro olhar de um especialista experiente, s\u00e3o prontamente reconhecidas. Em muitos desses casos, o que ocorre \u00e9 que as esp\u00e9cies j\u00e1 descritas s\u00e3o pouco conhecidas e\/ou a descri\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 muito antiga e pouco informativa. Assim, n\u00e3o \u00e9 poss\u00edvel ter clareza se estamos diante de uma nova esp\u00e9cie, ou de uma esp\u00e9cie j\u00e1 descrita. Apesar de n\u00e3o ser t\u00e3o comum hoje em dia, pode acontecer de uma esp\u00e9cie ter sido descrita mais de uma vez, principalmente quando existe dimorfismo sexual (machos s\u00e3o bem diferentes das f\u00eameas), esp\u00e9cimes com alguma anomalia, ou ainda pelo desconhecimento de esp\u00e9cies j\u00e1 descritas, entre outros fatores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Por todos estes motivos, apenas um trabalho minucioso de revis\u00e3o taxon\u00f4mica \u00e9 capaz de solucionar quest\u00f5es t\u00e3o complexas, j\u00e1 que para avan\u00e7ar no conhecimento taxon\u00f4mico do grupo em estudo \u00e9 fundamental que se conhe\u00e7a muito bem as esp\u00e9cies j\u00e1 descritas. Dessa forma, em um trabalho de revis\u00e3o taxon\u00f4mica, o foco n\u00e3o \u00e9 apenas descrever esp\u00e9cies novas, mas tamb\u00e9m em \u201credescobrir\u201d esp\u00e9cies descritas anteriormente e melhorar as informa\u00e7\u00f5es sobre elas. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apesar das condi\u00e7\u00f5es adversas, seja por falta de recursos financeiros e\/ou log\u00edsticos, v\u00e1rios estudos de revis\u00f5es taxon\u00f4micas j\u00e1 foram realizados e outros est\u00e3o sendo conduzidos com diversos grupos de peixes da bacia amaz\u00f4nica. Para tanto, grande parte da fonte de dados para estas pesquisas est\u00e1 atualmente armazenada em <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biological collections<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no Brasil e no exterior, as quais funcionam como verdadeiros reposit\u00f3rios da biodiversidade. Destaca-se no Brasil a cole\u00e7\u00e3o de peixes do Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas da Amazonia (<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/pesquisa.inpa.gov.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">INPA<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), Museu de Zoologia da USP (<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mz.usp.br\/pt\/pagina-inicial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MZUSP<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) e Museu Nacional do Rio de Janeiro (<\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.museunacional.ufrj.br\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MNRJ<\/a><\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), que ao longo de suas hist\u00f3rias armazenam uma grande quantidade de peixes preservados em vidros (chamados de lotes) com \u00e1lcool 70% (incluindo amostras de tecidos para an\u00e1lises de DNA) das mais variadas localidades<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Nestas cole\u00e7\u00f5es est\u00e1 catalogada grande parte das esp\u00e9cies de peixes j\u00e1 conhecida da bacia amaz\u00f4nica. Em um destes estudos, realizamos a revis\u00e3o taxon\u00f4mica do g\u00eanero de peixes chamado <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryconops,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conhecido popularmente no Brasil como piabas ou lambaris (veja a primeira imagem deste texto aqui no blog). Dentro deste g\u00eanero, 19 esp\u00e9cies eram conhecidas at\u00e9 o ano de 2015). Ao longo de mais de cinco anos de investiga\u00e7\u00f5es, j\u00e1 analisamos mais de 2 mil lotes (um \u00fanico lote pode conter um ou centenas de esp\u00e9cimes ou indiv\u00edduos)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0de v\u00e1rias localidades da Am\u00e9rica do Sul, principalmente da bacia amaz\u00f4nica.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Com o avan\u00e7o no estudo da taxonomia desses peixes, oito esp\u00e9cies j\u00e1 foram descritas em artigos cient\u00edficos entre os anos de 2015 e 2020 (ver imagem acima) e outras duas est\u00e3o prestes a ser \u201cbatizadas\u201d. Contudo, nossos resultados apontam a exist\u00eancia de pelo menos mais 18 esp\u00e9cies ainda para serem descritas somente para este g\u00eanero, sendo 15 delas da bacia amaz\u00f4nica. Al\u00e9m disso, verificamos que algumas esp\u00e9cies s\u00e3o end\u00eamicas, ou seja, restrita a uma determinada \u00e1rea (ex: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryconops munduruku<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do rio Tapaj\u00f3s, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryconops rheoruber<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> do rio Xingu, entre outras). Por outro lado, outras esp\u00e9cies que eram conhecidas de um \u00fanico rio, s\u00e3o na verdade muito mais distribu\u00eddas na bacia amaz\u00f4nica.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embora ainda n\u00e3o tenhamos a resposta para a pergunta de quantas esp\u00e9cies de peixes ocorrem na bacia amaz\u00f4nica, cada estudo dos taxonomistas contribui para que cheguemos mais pr\u00f3ximo de uma estimativa realista do n\u00famero de esp\u00e9cies. O surgimento de novas esp\u00e9cies \u00e9 um processo natural (que pode levar muitos anos), assim como tamb\u00e9m \u00e9 a extin\u00e7\u00e3o.
